Boston Bar Mitzvah Party Ideas by Devora Millman
In our continuing series of innovative ways to create a special bar or bat mitzvah celebration without breaking the bank, we at Broadway Gourmet have a few ideas for an affordable catered reception. Last time we spoke about creative ways to cut costs by hosting the reception in your own home or a low cost venue such as the synagogue or even a diner.
We were lucky enough to work with a wonderful family in Wellesley for their daughter’s bas mitzvah celebration in July.
They wanted a Hawaiian theme (they have a beautiful outdoor pool)
but they didn't not have a a large budget to go all out.

The first thing we did was set up a fruit smoothie bar for the kids.
We had a lot of tropical choices like mangoes, papayas, and pineapple in
addition to the old stand bys (strawberries, bananas, and orange juice).
Then for the adults, we had Mai Tai's, Piña Colada's and Blue Hawaii's.
The costs for the bars were minimal and were a great way to keep
everyone hydrated in the hot sun.
Although we hadn't planned it this way initially, it turned out to be a
great activity for the kids (and for the adults as well!).

For entertainment, we had a belly dancer come and teach the girls to belly dance.
The girls had a great time with that. She did a little performance, and then the girls
watched the movie 50 First Dates with Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler all filmed
in Hawaii. It was a great night and it didn’t break the bank!
