Roses are Red, Some Violets are Gray, Let’s Pair Wine and Chocolate with Broadway Gourmet!

Some of our top recommendations include Maggio Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 and Clos La Chance California Chardonnay 2009. One of our favorite local chocolate producers is Taza Chocolate, in neighboring Somerville,Massachusetts.

As Valentine’s Day approaches and people come together, let’s do the same with some delicious wines and chocolates. Finding the perfect match can be a delicious and satisfying treat.

The trick is to pair lighter chocolates with lighter wines; darker chocolates with a full-bodied wine. If you enjoy the rich taste of Zinfandel, you might pair it with a semisweet dark chocolate. For all my Cognac fans, a deep dark chocolate or a bittersweet dark chocolate will do nicely. If you enjoy milk chocolate, you will also be happy with a glass of Merlot.

Being one of Boston's favorite caterers, we have hosted and planned many events that call for creative pairing. For a recent Brookline wedding, we chose a Chardonnay / Semillon blend to accompany the first course salad. We had a Sauvignon Blanc wine for the seafood course.  We switched over to a Pinot Noir with the main course of beef tenderloin. For dessert, we served a contemporary chocolate mousse and paired it with a black Muscat.

In a few months we will be hosting a wedding in Newton where the bride and groom have a fondness for Prosecco.  For those not familiar with this Italian sparkling wine that is often made Dry or Extra Dry it is often used as a Champagne (or other sparkling wine) substitute.   It works very well paired with hors d’oeuvres like bruschetta, crostini, soft cheeses, stuffed mushrooms or shrimp, and olives.  Which works out very well as the guests will be welcomed into the room after the ceremony to a beautiful Antipasto display and, of course, wait staff with silver trays of goblets filled with Prosecco.

So pour the wine, light the fire and enjoy the company. On Valentine’s Day, remember, the more the merrier. So don’t forget the cheese…and the strawberries too!
